If you know me at all, then you know I’m an avid reader. This winter I switched up my morning routine to get up at 5 AM (eek I know!) to read and write before the world wakes up. I was skeptical at first, too, but now it is one of the most nourishing parts of my day.

To be awake while the world is still dark and silent provides a sacred space of reflection necessary for creative production.

Because of this extra time, I’ve been reading way more than usual. As I check books off of my list and add more to the (never-ending) “to-read” category, I thought it’d be useful to share my recent favorites with you!

These are the books that have helped me dream bigger and keep going on this creative journey.

Let’s Read!

1) Find Your Artistic Voice by Lisa Congdon

Lisa is an illustrator and activist who is truly inspiring. Her work is playfully powerful and encourages creatives to embrace the messages they have to share with the world.

In Find Your Artistic Voice, Lisa outlines how to discover your style, consistently practice, and share your unique outlook. She also interviews a variety of artists to give a diverse range of perspectives and experiences.

2)In the Company of Women by Grace Bonney

This is a stunning collection to have on your coffee table. The book features interviews with a wide variety of women creators alongside beautiful photography and insights into creative business.

I’ve read through this book multiple times and still find myself checking it out from the library whenever I need a reminder of why I’m on this creative journey. It’s an inspiring way to start the day by reading one interview (they’re quick! 2 pages or so) with your morning cup of joe.

3) Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

A classic. Elizabeth Gilbert dives into the mysterious, elusive aspects of creativity while sharing ways to confidently practice your craft, trust your vision, and show up to the page time and time again.

4) Art Inc. by Lisa Congdon

All of the stuff you didn’t learn in art school.

Congdon generously shares the nuts and bolts of running a creative business in this book with practical, tangible tips for success and sustainability. I highly recommend this read if you are looking to grow your art practice into your job.

5) Keep Going by Austin Kleon

This was by far my favorite read of 2019.

Similar to Kleon’s other books, Show Your Work and Steal Like An Artist, Keep Going can be read in under an hour and yet provide inspiration for months.

Kleon gives tips on how to continue your artistic journey including the power of a walk, the permission to change your mind, and the value of creating for other people. I highly recommend diving into this quick read to reignite that creative fire!

So, that’s my 5 Book Round-Up (for now)!

If you have additional creative books you love, let me know in the comments!

I’d love to add them to my library.
